Scientists have found that spirulina can help reduce the deadly affects of radiation poisoning.

This is particularly important in the face of the ongoing nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan and the growing evidence amassed by nuclear experts that the radiation is continuing to contaminate parts of Korea, the Philippines, Hawaii, North America and even Western Europe.

Spirulina, is a food eaten by both humans and animals. Today it’s used as a dietary supplement as its properties are recognized as having a beneficial health affect on a number of maladies and chronic diseases.

Most commercial supplements derive from two cyanobacteria: Arthrospira platensis and Arthrospira maxima.

Discovery that spirulina fights radiation sickness

After the devastating 1986 accident at the Chernobyl reactor complex in Ukraine, USSR, doctors found that over 300,000 people suffered from the effects of radiation caused illnesses. More than 160,000 children had radiation sickness, the rest were people tasked to clean-up operations across the stricken region.

Exposed for long periods of time to various radioactive elements in the food, water and air, radiation poisoning developed in hundreds of thousands. The exposure led to increases in cases of cancers including leukemia, thyroid maladies, severe anemia and significant degeneration of organs such as the liver. Others were found to be suffering from severely compromised immune systems and bone marrow damage. Birth defects began climbing.

“Adverse effects as a result of Chernobyl irradiation have been found in every group that has been studied. Brain damage has been found in individuals directly exposed…Premature cataracts; tooth and mouth abnormalities; and blood, lymphatic, heart, lung gastrointestinal, urologic, bone, and skin diseases afflict and impair people, young and old alike. Endocrine dysfunction, particularly thyroid disease, is far more common than might be expected, with some 1,000 cases of thyroid dysfunction for every case of thyroid cancer, a marked increase after the catastrophe. There are genetic damage and birth defects especially in children of liquidators and in children born in area with high levels of radioisotope contamination. [Source]

The discovery of spirulina’s amazing benefits was discovered by desperate physicians racing to save the dying. Meticulously outlined in the book “How to Help Support the Body’s Healing After Intense Radioactive or Radiation Exposure” [available free online], author Bill

Bodri described the efforts by a UK health company that shipped massive quantities of spirulina to hospitals in Belarus feverishly working to save as many of the poisoned as possible.

According to Bodri, the Institute of Radiation Medicine in Minsk distributed the spirulina to physicians with juvenile patients suffering from radiation sickness and were instructed to give the children five grams of the supplement every day. That regimen continued for 45 days straight as signs of improvement emerged.

As the doctors monitored the children’s progress they were stunned by marked improvements in their patients’ overall health. Children who did not receive the  five gram dose of spirulina continued to sicken.

Writing in his medical blog about the Soviet doctors’ progress with the children, Dr. Joseph Mercola notes:” The spirulina-treated children showed bone marrow, spinal fluid, blood cell and liver regeneration. Dangerously low white blood cell counts of about 1,000 (typical of leukemia) rose to 3,000 in only 20 days. Urine radioactivity levels decreased by 50 percent in 20 days.” [Source]

In his 2004 account of the spirulina “miracle” Bodri wrote that “Health restoration was reported even when radiation sickness was so advanced that the children’s eyes were bulging out of their sockets.”

With the dramatic evidence of reversal, the Belarus Ministry of Health determined that spirulina supplements not only aid the body in ridding itself of deadly radionuclides, but speeds up the process and does so with no measurable adverse effects. The medical team made special note that spirulina worked especially well in evacuating the radioactive isotope caesium-137 from the body.

Lead Russian researcher L.P. Loseva wrote in his 1993 study of the remarkable effect of spirulina (“Spirulina — natural sorbent of radionucleides.”) and its ability to reverse radiation sickness:

“Spirulina, a natural food supplement, reduced urine radioactivity levels by 50% in only 20 days. This result was achieved after giving 5 grams a day to children at the Institute of Radiation Medicine in Minsk, Belarus. The Institute has developed a program to treat 100 children every 20 days. This…confirms 1990-91 research on the beneficial health effects of spirulina on children with radiation sickness.

“Use of spirulina decreases radioactive dose load received from food contaminated with radionuclides, Cesium-137 and Strontium-90. Spirulina is favorable for normalizing the adaptive potential of children’s bodies in conditions of long-lived low dose radiation.”

During 1999 Loseva penned a subsequent report for the 8th International Congress of Applied Algology: “Spirulina platensis is an effective natural adsorbent of long-life radionuclides caesium-137, strontium-90, and potassium-40 and can lead to a reduction of radioactive contamination in children ages 10 to 16 years of age.”

Why spirulina works

The results are undeniable, but what exactly makes this simple food work its magic on those sick or dying from exposure to radioactive particles or ionizing radiation?

According to Mercola the answer can be found in the substance that causes spirulina to appear bluish-green, its pigment.

“One of the explanations is cyanobacteria’s unique blue pigment, phycocyanin. Spirulina is 16 percent phycocyanin by weight. Sycophancy attaches to spirulina’s membranes to impart the distinctive bluish color.

“Besides being a pigment, phycocyanin is also a nitrogen storage molecule. The nitrogen atoms bind with heavy metals, such as radioactive caesium-137, strontium-90, and potassium-40, hence ‘cleansing’ these radioactive metals from your body.”

Evidence dangerous radiation contaminating North America

University of California, Berkeley Physics lab has been monitoring the increasing radiation spreading across the West Coast and other regions of southern Canada and parts of the United States. Their reports indicate that radioactive particles from the Fukushima reactors disaster is continuing to have a significant effect, contaminating ground water, livestock and fruits and vegetables. Milk is also affected. [See links to related articles at end of this article.]

Japan is one of the largest producers of spirulina. But to work, spirulina must be pure and uncontaminated, as it easily absorbs heavy metals whether the metal is radioactive or not. No one knows how much of Japan’s spirulina crop has been compromised or damaged. A significant portion was lost during the tsunamis that inundated northeastern Japan following the mega-thrust earthquake that rocked the island nation.

Hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of people were exposed—and are continuing to be exposed—to the radioactive fallout from the severely damaged reactors and fuel rods. All three reactors have never been repaired. According to recent reports the three damaged reactor cores are all exposed and have broken containment and experienced partial meltdowns.

The radiation levels at Fukushima now exceed 8,000 microsieverts per hour, 70,000 times the legal limit of 1,000 microsieverts a year.
